The black ant is a common pest in lawns and golf course turf. These two-node ants are very small, workers are only about 2mm in length and dark brown to jet black in color. Their black coloring can distinguish them from other types of ants. The little black ant generally seeks out dry, well-drained soils with low water-holding capacity. They build colonies throughout soil that damage and dehydrate roots, leading to thin brown spots throughout the turf.
